While the meeting between Iran and European countries, England, France and Germany in Istanbul ended, it was reported that the parties reached an agreement to reunite for a solution to the issue.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kazım Garibabadi, who represented Iran in the nuclear talk in Istanbul between Iran and the European parties of the nuclear agreement called E3, made a statement on the X account regarding the outcome of the meeting.
Stating that they held serious, open and detailed meetings with European representatives in Istanbul, Garibabadi said, "The latest developments regarding the lifting of sanctions and the nuclear issue have been discussed and examined."
Garibabadi stated that some European countries also brought up the attitudes of Israel in supporting Tel Aviv in its attacks on Iran and criticized this attitude.
Garibabadi noted: “We have explained our principled stances, including the so-called snapback mechanism. Both sides came to the meeting with specific ideas, and various aspects of these ideas were examined. An agreement has been reached on the continuation of consultations on this subject."
At a time when the uncertainties and tensions regarding the Iranian nuclear file were escalating, talks were held with Iran on nuclear issues in Istanbul between England, France and Germany, the parties to the nuclear agreement in 2015.
The negotiation process was interrupted after Israel's attacks
While the US negotiation process with Iran was going on, Israel launched an attack on Iran on June 13 and the negotiation process with both the USA and Europe was interrupted.
Iran is concerned that the so-called "snapback mechanism" that could enable the return of the United Nations (UN) sanctions, which were lifted with the nuclear agreement signed in 2015, will be operated by European countries. The mechanism in question expires on October 18. It is predicted that if a solution cannot be found regarding Iran's nuclear program, European countries will be able to operate the mechanism before this date.
Nuclear deal in 2015 and “trigger mechanism”
An agreement was signed between Iran, the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany on July 14, 2015 in exchange for the lifting of sanctions, which Iran's nuclear activities were limited. The USA unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018 and brought back sanctions on Iran. Iran asked European countries to take measures to compensate for the US sanctions, but the Europeans could not take a step in this regard, although they opposed the action of the USA.
Iran then began to gradually stop its commitments to the agreement a year later and later turned to high-level uranium enrichment activities.
Britain, France and Germany, on the other hand, are threatening to operate the article called "snapback" in the nuclear agreement, which was not implemented after the unilateral withdrawal of the United States, which has the possibility of reintroding UN sanctions on the grounds that it violates the agreement.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Iraqi, on the other hand, stated that the European parties did not have the legal basis to activate the mechanism because they "violated the foundations of the agreement" and "lost their participatory role in the agreement".
The parties later announced that they would meet in Istanbul on July 25 to discuss the nuclear issue.
